Photofacial Q+A

Today I am answering all of your questions regarding my recent photofacial! Please keep in mind, everyone’s skin is different and has different needs! A photofacial was beneficial for me because of my skin tone and underlying brown spots and UV damage. I suggest meeting with a dermatologist or trusted esthetician before booking one for yourself!

What Is a Photofacial?

A photofacial, or BBL in some medspas, is a refreshing and renewing facial that uses broadband light lasers to correct skin issues such as hyperpigmentation, brown spots, collagen loss, and more. A photofacial can be beneficial for a variety of skin issues, including wrinkles, sun damage, skin lesions, large pores, etc.

What Does a Photofacial Do?

A photofacial uses the light lasers to gently heat the top layer of skin to rejuvenate collagen production. This allows skin cells to regenerate quicker, resulting in younger, smoother looking skin.

Does a Photofacial Hurt?

Your esthetician will test different levels of heat on you, as well as match the level of heat to your skin needs in order to get the best results. I did not personally feel pain during the photofacial, but rather just like quick pokes of a pin across the skin. My skin is naturally fair and gets red very easily, so after the photofacial my face was red like I just went for a long run.

How Long Will Results Last?

This, like many other cosmetic and skin procedures, varies based on person and skin type! For me personally, it is beneficial to get one every year to prevent additional brown spots and signs of aging. Others might need a few throughout the year, others every few years!

What Is the Downtime?

Again, everyone is different. I was swollen for two days after (shown in the photos). However, it wasn’t anything over the top, restricting me from going out and doing normal activities! In general, you should avoid direct sunlight for 5-7 days after your photofacial since your skin is sensitive afterwards. However, I was able to wear makeup and work out like normal!

Immediately after (swelling on cheeks and under eyes)
Day after photofacial, swelling on cheeks and brown spots come to surface
Day after photofacial, right side of face is more swollen than left, brown spots came to surface on forehead and nose
Two days after photofacial, right side still more swollen than left
